The Malayan Tapir Project
More Factoids | Even More Factoids | Erin's Page

It was just me and Torrence walking along in the darkness of the Indonesian rain forest. There was a rustling. We turned, and screamed. IT WAS A MALAYAN TAPIR!

The Malayan tapir is not really that terrifying, though. And if you haven't already figured it out, they don't jump out of the woods at you. They're actually pretty shy. If one is confronted, it will usually run into the woods, or under water. This animal loves the water. It can swim, and is never found far from water.

I think it's really cute. Now, this animal may look freakish and weird to you, but I wouldn't insult it, because it weighs 550-704 pounds, and it is seven to eight feet long. Actually, this is pretty cool: the white stripe on its back breaks up its outline during the night, so that predators can't see it. So if you looked at it at night, you would see pieces of it looking like they were in different places!

Now, you must be wondering why i'm doing this particular animal. Well, the Malayan Tapir is seriously endangered. All of its habitat is being destroyed, but we'll go into further detail on the next page. So, really, if we don't stop chopping down the rainforest, this very cool animal will die out. And really, we can't afford to have any more species die out.
